In the Hei Ma He Township in Qinghai Province, families struggle to survive with an annual per capita income of only RMB 2200 and limited access to decent education, infrastructure, and healthcare. They live in very basic conditions due to little government intervention and lack of market access. Most villagers are Tibetan nomadic herders of the Yellow Sect.
There are around 45,000 livestock in the village, of which 8040 are yaks, the rest sheep and horses. Each family has on average 30-40 yaks. Income earned from livestock is around US$290; income from collecting caterpillar fungus and other short-term jobs is only US$66. Local communities do not know the market value of their resources and even if they do, are unable to connect to international markets. |
