A Shanghai-based company called Shokay…is determined to prove the viability of a home-grown variety of social entrepreneurship…It's an exotic tale of elusive, semi-mythical beasts, a yarn of weary, spirit-dampened treks through mountain plateaus, in search of the Golden Fleece, as it were.
2008/3/1 That's Shanghai. "Shokay invests in down and sustainable development."
Doing good is looking good…super soft yak down is sourced directly from Tibetan herders, and crafted into a select range of home textiles, accessories, and baby wear.

Similarly worthy of some attention is Shokay, a China based company with outlets worldwide that produces luxury yak down scarves, throws and yarn. Beautifully soft and warm, the fibres are hand-combed from the yaks in Tibet and money made from the product goes straight to the herders because the raw yak fibre is directly sourced.

What resources have you got that you are not using to their fullest potential? I love this example from Tibet. How do you boost incomes for nomads in western China who might live seven hours from any roadside, much less a marketplace? First step: check their possessions for any sign of untapped value...

In a Chinese province near the Tibetan border, two women -- one from Hong Kong, the other from Taiwan -- are helping thousands of yak herders build a better life for their families through a new social enterprise called Shokay..."There are so many entrepreneurs in the region," says Ms. So. "People really need to challenge themselves and rethink philanthropy. It's a matter of combining elements: really understanding a social problem, finding a social need, and thinking of innovative and sustainable ways to do it."

Then there was something unexpected in my swatch: the yarn worked up with a dimensional, textured finish. You don't need to take a very close look to appreciate the twists and turns of the individual strands that make up this yarn. It's an attractive effect that adds a little something extra to even the simplest projects.

Shokay is doing good work, and I'm honored that they sought me out and gave me the opportunity to contribute in this small way. In fact, I plan to donate more designs for their use in the future.

Their [Shokay] yarn is really really nice and soft. It feels a lot like cashmere.

SHOKAY: It's a little known fact, but yak undercoats actually rival cashmere, alpaca and vicuna for softness.

The yarn is cottony soft….

So not only do you get to knit (which is good) with something fabulous (which is very good), but you get to help people while you're doing it (which is indeed the best of all).

I needed some yak to knit. Shokay, 100% pure yak down in an earthy color.
